Christmas ornaments are ornaments used to decorate a Christmas tree. Baubles, “Christmas bulbs,” “Christmas bubbles,” and “Christmas ball balls” are some names for them. Blown glass, metal, wood, blown plastics, expanded polystyrene, and ceramics are common materials for Christmas ornaments. Ornaments come in a variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from a simple round ball to intricate designs. Early modern Germany was the birthplace of contemporary Christmas trees during the Renaissance. It is sometimes linked to Protestant Christian reformer Martin Luther, who is supposed to have first affixed lighted candles to an evergreen tree in the 16th century.
Christmas ornaments: Interesting Facts – Custom racing duck christmas gift ornament
Apples, candy canes, and pastries in the shapes of stars, hearts, and flowers were used to embellish the first decorated trees. Glass baubles, as well as garlands of glass beads and tin figures that could be hung on trees, were initially created in Lauscha, Germany. The popularity of these decorations led to the creation of glass figures using clay moulds by highly trained craftspeople. Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort, is widely credited with bringing the Christmas tree tradition to England from his native Germany in 1841. The Christmas tree was brought to America by German immigrants, particularly Hessian soldiers. During a trip to Germany in the 1880s, American F. W. Woolworth came across Lauscha’s baubles. He built a fortune in the United States by importing German glass ornaments. Woolworth’s had imported 200,000 ornaments and made over $25 million in sales from Christmas decorations alone by the turn of the century. Until 1925, Germany was the sole maker of glass decorations. Japan was the second country to create substantial amounts of decorations in 1925, and the cottage industry suited Japanese families as well. In the late 1920s, Czechoslovakia and Poland, both with significant glass-making heritage, entered the market.
The start of World War II in Europe in 1939 cut off supplies of glass ornaments, as well as many other European imports. New York’s Corning Glass Works entered the ornament market. Corning was an expert at making light bulbs, which were made by a ribbon machine that poured molten glass into an infinite succession of moulds. After WWII, the East German government converted most of Lauscha’s glassworks into state-owned enterprises, and bauble manufacture halted in the town. The majority of the companies were reconstituted as private companies once the Berlin Wall was demolished. There are roughly 20 small glass-blowing companies in Lauscha that still make ornaments today.
