The start of World War II in Europe in 1939 cut off supplies of glass ornaments, as well as many other European imports. New York’s Corning Glass Works entered the ornament market. Corning was an expert at making light bulbs, which were made by a ribbon machine that poured molten glass into an infinite succession of moulds. After WWII, the East German government converted most of Lauscha’s glassworks into state-owned enterprises, and bauble manufacture halted in the town. The majority of the companies were reconstituted as private companies once the Berlin Wall was demolished.
